2. How can I dispose of an appliance such as a refrigerator, hot water heater or air conditioner?

Appliances like refrigerators, hot water heaters or air conditioners, or "white goods," can be placed at the curb on your scheduled pickup day. Collection will be made by a separate truck. These items can also be brought to Kersey Valley Landfill for disposal as well.

3. What can I do with my old TV and computer equipment?

North Carolina has a landfill ban on TV's and computers. Take them to the City's Material Recovery Center,5875 Riverdale Dr Jamestown, NC, Ingleside Compost Facility & Recycle Drop off site 3001 Ingleside Dr., High Point, or Republic Services 2750 Patterson Street in Greensboro for no charge. 4. How can I discard old carpet?

Carpet rolls no larger than 4 feet long and 18 inches in diameter. No more than 2 rolls will be picked up. Rolls cannot weigh more than 50 pounds. Carpet contractors are responsible for disposal of any and all materials resulting from their work and can be taken to the Kersey Valley Landfill 3940 Kivett Dr., Jamestown, NC

5. How do I dispose of construction or demolition debris?

6. Why have I received an orange tag?

Please check for the reason noted on the tag. Carts and other items must be placed a minimum of 3 feet away from obstructions such as trees, mailboxes, low hanging lines, vehicles, street signs, etc.  Call Customer Service at 336-883-3111 to request a call back about your orange tag and what we can do to help you better understand.

Curbside Pickup - Violation Process

-1st week: City tags as a violation to educate - tag informs resident what to do with item/items.

-2nd week: City tags again as a violation and warns of fine if not corrected by next collection date.

-3rd week: If resident has not complied, City removes pile and resident is charged $250 per load - and the fee is placed on the utility bill where applicable. If utility services are not applicable, an invoice will be sent to the property owner.

If the customer/homeowner contacts the Environmental Services supervisor and is willing to correct a violation in a timely manner, staff works with the resident without charging.

1. How does the household hazardous waste program work?

HHW - Household Hazardous Waste includes items such as:

• Antifreeze
• Brake fluid
• Car batteries
• Cleaners

2. How do I properly dispose of my household hazardous wastes?

For items like pesticides, insecticides, cleaning fluids, paints, and batteries, the City of High Point operates Household Hazardous Waste Disposal events. Guilford County residents may also take these to Republic Services 2750 Patterson St., Greensboro. Hours are Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Call 336-855-7925 for more information.

3. How do I dispose of an automobile battery?

Advance Auto Parts or other auto parts stores will accept motor vehicle batteries for disposal along with Interstate Batteries.

4. How do I properly dispose of my electronics?

Residents can dispose of e-waste (computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, TVs, etc.), at the following facilities.  

• High Point Material Recovery Facility 5875 Riverdale Dr., Jamestown, NC      M-Th 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
• Ingleside Compost Facility & Recycle Drop off Site 3001 Ingleside Dr., High Point, NC   M-F 8 a.m.-4 p.m. & Sat. 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

 DO NOT place these items in any recycle cart, trash/garbage cart or any other receptacle. Only put in the designated areas for their proper disposal.

1. Does the City collect medical waste?

The City only collects approved red sharp containers; please contact Customer Service for pickup at 336-883-3111.

2. Can I put needles in a milk jug or 2 liter soda bottle?

No, these items need to be placed in an approved sharps container that can be purchased at most drug stores and pharmacies. Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

3. Does the City collect dead animals?

Yes, the City provides free collection of dead animals (pets only, no livestock) weighing less than 100 pounds to residents. The animal may be placed in a heavy duty plastic bag and placed in the garbage cart. Or, you may contact Customer Service for pickup at 336-883-3111.

Animals must be at the curb for pick up.

1. When will recycling be collected?

Recycling is collected at the curb on your regular collection day and placed at the curb by 6 a.m. Recycling is collected on every other week basis.

2. How does the City of High Point’s recycling program work?

Each residence served by the City of High Point is provided with one green 95-gallon recycling cart. You may purchase one additional cart for $70. Do not bag any recyclables materials inside the cart. Recycling is provided on your regular scheduled pickup day every other week. 3. What can’t I put in my recycling cart?

No needles or medical waste, Styrofoam, bubble wrap, household hazardous waste, shoes, light bulbs, window glass, scrap metal, pots/pans, foil, garden hoses, blinds, paints or construction materials, garbage or yard waste should go in recycling carts. Please take your plastic bags to a grocery store receptacle. Styrofoam may be taken to one of our styrofoam drop-off locations. 4. I have some large cardboard boxes. Do I need to do anything with them?

Cardboard boxes should be flattened or cut into pieces that can fit into your recycling cart. Large amounts of flattened cardboard can be taken directly to our Material Recovery Facility or other participating Recycle Drop off Sites.

3. What happens if I do not follow the guidelines for when to set out and remove my cart?

City code enforcement officers and Environmental Services staff monitor neighborhoods for compliance and will leave a notice when violations occur. 4. I have trouble getting my garbage cart to the curb. What can I do?

At the City of High Point, we focus every day on enriching the lives of our citizens by creating an exceptional environment and providing exemplary services that enable our community to thrive and prosper. In achieving this, we offer curbside/backdoor collection assistance to individuals who, because of permanent or temporary physical disability, are unable to bring their garbage and recycling carts to the curb. We limit this level of service to those who do not share a residence with someone who could bring the carts to the curb on their behalf.

As part of the program, City of High Point crews will collect garbage and recycling from either the back/side yard area of your home. It is imperative that the service is provided only to qualified residents and there are no obstructions that would prevent us from performing this task safely.

An application is required and you may contact the Customer Service Center to receive an application by calling (336) 883-3111. Please note your application will not be considered complete without a physician's signature on their office letterhead.

5. Do I need a special garbage cart?

Yes, garbage collection is only provided for those with approved City of High Point 95 gallon carts. These can be purchased by calling our Customer Service Department at 336-883-3111 for a cost of $70. The City provides for pickup of 2 garbage carts per residence.

6. What can I put in the rollout cart?

Only bagged household trash can be put in the cart. Do not place yard waste, brush, or any construction debris in the garbage cart. Automotive parts, tires, hazardous ashes, corrugated cardboard and plastic bottles are also prohibited. You should place recyclables in your recycling cart for collection. 7. Do I need to bag my trash?

Yes. All trash must be bagged before being put in the rollout cart. City ordinance requires that garbage be bagged to reduce wind-blown litter and discourage vermin. Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

8. Can I place excess garbage next to the cart at the curb?

No, all garbage must fit inside the cart. If you have more than will fit, retain the garbage for collection the next week. In some very special circumstances a request can be made for additional pick-up and disposal. Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

9. What if I have to be out of town during collection?

If feasible, retain your garbage until you're back in town. Otherwise, ask a relative or neighbor to roll out and/or roll in your cart. Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

10. Which days are considered garbage holidays?

Currently, there will be no collection of garbage/yard waste/recyclables on:
-New Year's Day
-Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday
-Good Friday
-Memorial Day
-Independence Day
-Labor Day
-Thanksgiving Day
-Christmas Day

Collection will be 1 day later for these holidays and the remaining days of the week affected by the holiday. Garbage collection days will remain the same for holidays that fall on a Friday. Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

11. What happens if I forget to roll my cart to the street?

If you forget to roll out your garbage cart, roll it out the next week for collection. Our trucks operate on a strict schedule and defined route(s). Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

12. What do I do if my garbage, yard waste or recycling were not picked up?

Our collection rate is greater than 99%, but in the event we did miss your container, you may call Customer Service at 336-883-3111. The missed collection will be picked up on the following day (Monday through Friday). If staff determines that our driver did not miss your container a supervisor will contact you to discuss the program further.

13. What can I do with paint?

If you have a small amount of paint in the can, once it has been dried out with kitty litter, sawdust or other similar products, it can be put out with the garbage. Please call 336-883-3111 for more information.

14. Why have I received an orange tag on my cart?

This could be for a number of reasons. The driver should have marked a box explaining why. It may be because the cart was facing the wrong direction which may result in partial dumping or damaging the lid, or it could be that the cart was placed too close to a pole or other object that prevents collection. The carts should maintain a 3 foot area of clearance. If our driver identifies a hazardous material he can tag the cart as notification to you that these materials are not accepted at the landfill. If the cart is damaged in some way we may be letting you know that it's time to replace the cart with a new one. In either case, you may call Customer Service at 336-883-3111 to request a call back about your orange tag so that we can help you better understand the reasoning for receiving the tag.

1. How does the Red Box Rental Program work?

These are used for residential clean-up projects and rent for $150. This is a non-refundable fee. The city will deliver the box on 1 working day and pick it up within 3 working days after you have loaded it.

For example: A red box delivered on Monday will be picked up Thursday; delivery on a Tuesday will be picked up on a Friday; delivered Thursday picked up Monday; delivered Friday picked up Tuesday.

You must pay in advance, either in person at the Customer Service Department or by phone 336-883-3111.

2. How can I rent a trash trailer/dumpster (red box) for a large clean up?

You can rent a red box by calling Customer Service at 336-883-3111. These are for residential use and cannot be used for Private contractor waste.

Customers are allowed to put some building materials in our box, such as shingles, wood installation and siding provided the customer is doing the work and not a contractor. 5. How big is the red box?

The City's yard waste program is intended for the regular maintenance of a property, not the removal of an entire tree(s) or lot clearing. Yard waste must be separated from your regular garbage, recycling or bulk pile. Yard waste material includes grass clippings, leaves, bush trimmings and limbs from regular maintenance work/pruning. 3. How should I prepare my yard waste if I do not have a cart?

Please do not mix your yard waste with non-yard waste materials (rock, dirt and fencing material). Your yard waste must be placed in a City of High Point Toter, bundled, or bagged (if bagged, you must use paper bags). If bagged the item cannot weigh over 50 pounds and must hold contents. 4. I paid a contractor to remove my trees. Will the City pick up the material?

No, the city no longer collects large, loose, untied tree limbs placed at the curb. Any work performed by a tree service company must be disposed of by that company. A homeowner has 3 options for the removal of a large quantity of limbs and tree debris:

1 - Cut and tie to appropriate size and weight for the city to remove for free on the normal collection day.

2 - If this is your personal residence you may take limbs to the Ingleside Composting Facility (Located at 3001 Ingleside Drive) for free.

3 - Rent a 14 cubic yard Red Box ($150 for 3 days) by calling Customer Service at 336-883-3111.
