Citizens Academy

The High Point Police Department's Citizen's Police Academy is a 13-week program designed to enhance community relationships by familiarizing academy participants with the High Point Police Department, its policies, people, training and practices. The intent of the Academy is not to train community members to become police officers, but to show participants firsthand the daily responsibilities and expectations of the members of our department. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the High Point Police Department and its programs, as well as get to know the officers who keep your community safe.

The Academy is held twice a year:

Spring Session: January - April

Fall Session: September - December

Sessions

Classes are held at the High Point Police Department on Mondays from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. The Academy includes High Point community members and High Point University students. They learn about the department's innovative crime-fighting strategies, community involvement and the daily duties of an officer. They also gain insight  into specialized units and the legal and constitutional guidelines police officers must follow.

The sessions are a blend of traditional classroom time, demonstrations, and scenario-based training exercises. Topics include death investigations, use of force tactics, the canine program, building searches and traffic stops. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a Tactical Demonstration on a Saturday and participate in a ride-along with a patrol officer.
